Word Press comes with a bunch of tools and options that allows you to very quickly get a website up and running, but if you want to change the appearence of a word press site and you can't find the right theme, then you need to know how to change the languages. Depending on your learning speed, learning to speak Mandarin Chinese may be easier, but once you learn enough to be dangerous, it goes a lot faster.

If your interested in making your own wordpress themes or just want to customize them then you will need to learn the basic's of html. If you can learn then you will be able to understand everything that your site contains. This can be great, when your trying to change your font color, font size, boxes or images this will help you with everything. Frames are another item that allow of webmasters will use in there site and they are great, they allows you to import another website into your site within what is called an iframe, but search engines have trouble reading and understanding these codes and wouldn't be worth your time. Along with basic HTML are SHTML and XHTML for secure websites that are protected from hacking and XTHML for using sub commands in HTML.

CSS is another area of designing your pages that you'll want to learn. Cascading Style Sheets essentially sets a design for every page on the website, allowing you to create a consistency in your site's appearance. One major advantage is in the placement of items on your site. Say you have a site with over 100 pages, and if your a beginner that will sound like allot but that is only 1 page every 3 days and if you made it over 3 year then it's nothing, but say you have a header image and after three whole years you deicied to change it, you will need to have css code implimented otherwise, you will have to individually go through every single page and manually change the image.

One of the key elements with WordPress is PHP. It is a general purpose scripting language imbedded in HTML code that helps the computer determine how each item within the code is to be displayed. MySQL is also used heavily in WordPress and is used for open source data base configuration and control.

If you find this information interesting then you can find allot of great sources using google, and at W3.com. Remember that unless you plan on becoming a programmer, it isn't necessary to know everything about all of them, but if you're going to run a successful website, on WordPress or any other platform, you will want to know a little about how they work and how even the slightest change can make a big difference in the appearance of your site.

Additionally, it may not be enough to simply know the codes. Many tutorials in WordPress will show you how to change coding to achieve different results. You will need to manually input some portions of the code to put your individual touches into the code and unless you know the location of the files you want to add, the instructions are useless.

One of the best practices is to put your various files into folders with names that relate to the folder's content. Say you have allot of articles on your wordpress site then you will want them to be under the heading of there keyword, and this applies for all the different areas of your site.
